Knit this textured cowl flat, working side-to-side, before closing it up to create a tapered tube-shaped neck warmer. The sample uses a DK to worsted (light aran) handspun merino wool blend, but any similar soft wool commercial yarn should work well.

This project has a little bit of short-row shaping, but it’s almost superfluous: the brioche and garter stitch in combination makes for a remarkably functional fit.

Materials:

  • 220-275 yards of handspun DK to light aran weight yarn in soft wool, or similar
  • 1 set of straight needles or 1 24” circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • spare circular needle in size needed for gauge or 1-2 sizes smaller
  • Tapestry needle
  • smooth spare yarn for provisional cast-on
  • crochet hook sized to suit yarn

Gauge:
Gauge is 18 sts and 29 rows over 4”/10cm of lightly blocked garter stitch, worked flat. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
As shown, this cowl measures about 10”/25cm tall. It’s 11”/28cm wide at the base, and a little narrower at the top—10.25”/26cm. Its circumference is about double those width measurements, and it fits most average adults.
