From Knitting Without Tears: In Chapter 5, “Other Knitted Garments,” EZ says: “AND THIS BRINGS ME TO HATS. To which the sky is the limit. People will put anything on their heads, it seems to me for two reasons: either it keeps them warm, or it makes them feel cute. A good woolly cap can well combine these functions. What is warmer than a Watchcap? (they used to call them toques, and will, perhaps, again.)”

Pattern Notes: “A Watchcap is quick and easy, once you get the hang of the stitch. You will need about 4 oz of very thick wool; thick enough to give a gauge of 2.5 stitches to 1” if worked in stocking stitch, and a pair of very thick needles, size 10.5 to 15. The thicker the needles, the lighter and fluffier your watchcap.”

The cap is knit using either the Prime Rib or Brioche Stitch. It is sewn flat and then seamed.

“Caps are quickly made, and invaluable for using up scraps of wool for color patterns and stripes. They are excellent bazaar material, as people will pay more for them for mittens, and they are quicker and more fun to make.”
