This beanie is a lighter weight version of my “Charlie Beanie” which is knitted in a heavier yarn. Both beanie patterns were written as a way to show that by playing with colour and tone a relatively simple pattern can look a lot more complex than it is! Both beanies use just four shades of yarn – I would suggest that you choose three that are fairly similar in shade and tone plus a fourth stronger contrast. For these patterns it is important to keep the pattern stitches dominant otherwise they may be lost in the background shades. There is a hyperlink below to those who are unfamiliar with doing this. The pattern is knitted entirely in the round, rib upwards, and decreases at the crown are done by using centered double decreases (CDD). Again a hyperlink is attached if you have not used this technique before.

Materials

Jamiesons of Shetland Spindrift 100% Shetland wool (105m/115 yard to 25g) 1x 25g ball in each of the following shades.
• MC 570 Sorbet
• CC1 290 Oyster
• CC2 555 Blossom
• CC3 343 Ivory

Notions

• 1 set 2.5mm DPN or preferred method for working in the round for rib.
• 1 set 3mm DPN or preferred method for working in the round for body.
• You may wish to change to DPN for working the crown if using circular needles.
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends. • Balloon or hat blocker.
• Stitch marker

Size

One size to fit average size adult head. Finished circumference 58cm/23inches

Gauge

32 sts and 28 rows to 10cm over colourwork after blocking. Use 3mm needles as start point for checking gauge. Please check gauge carefully and adjust your needle size accordingly.
