This hat is a quick project created with super bulky yarn.

The pattern includes instructions for both a beanie (pictured) and a roll-up brim version. Because the cables are reversible, the rolled up brim looks just the same as the outside of the hat!

When designing the hat, I used a superwash wool-blend yarn (WOOLADDICTS Fire by Lang). Superwash wool and wool-blend yarns often grow when blocked, so the gauge that I have indicated (12 sts/4”) was measured after blocking. This is important! If you are using a non-superwash wool or wool-blend, you will likely need larger needles than the US 11/8mm indicated in the pattern (all of this is written in notes in the pattern).

I have included links to the 3 Kittens Needle Arts YouTube channel within the pattern for video tutorials for: tubular cast on for 1x1 ribbing, tubular bind off for 1x1 ribbing, and tips on weaving in ends invisibly.

Materials needed for 17” (19”) hat:

  • Without a brim - approx 75 (90) yards super-bulky yarn (one ball WOOLADDICTS Fire)
  • With rolled up brim - approx 110 (120) yards super-bulky yarn (two balls WOOLADDICTS Fire)
  • US 11/8mm needles - 16” circular and dpns or size to obtain gauge
  • cable needle
