This is a simple 2-color brioche scarf and cowl pattern I designed to help my students learn the 2-color brioche technique. If you have not done brioche before, I suggest you start out learning using my 1-color brioche pattern, Beginning Brioche Möbius Cowl, to learn the brioche knit stitch and purl stitch. It gives you a lot of practice using both stitches.

If you feel you are ready to try 2-color brioche, I think it’s easiest to learn in the round. The 2-color cowl is a great stash buster and knits up quickly. The scarf is a little trickier since you are knitting brioche flat and have to work both colors on one side and then both colors on the other. If you understand how to do the 2-color cowl it will make better sense.

Once you feel comfortable working 2-color brioche both in the round and flat, I suggest you try my third pattern in this series, Homage to Stephen brioche scarf. This pattern gives you practice with the basic increase and decreases to make beautiful stitch patterns developed by the “Queen of Brioche,” Nancy Marchant.

I have color-coded this pattern. The text for the light-colored yarn is in brown and the text for the dark-colored yarn is in black.

Yarn Requirements: Worsted weight, 220 yards(201 meters) of each color. I used Cascade Highland Duo, Colorway “2304-White” for my light color, and Colorway “2315-Deep Teal” for my dark color.

Needle Size: 6US, (4mm); I used a 24” circular needle for the scarf and a 16” circular needle for the cowl.

Gauge: 18.5 brioche sts and 17.5 rows = about 4 inches, (10 cm), though gauge is not critical.

Final measurements: I made my scarf 60”(152 cm) long, but it can be made longer or shorter by adding or subtracting repeats. My cowl was about 7”(18 cm) from cast-on to cast-off. Brioche grows as you wear it so keep that in mind.
