This hat is a great first cable pattern. Divided into four wedges, one wedge gets a cable detail and the rest are worked in simple ribbing or stockinette. With multiple sizes available, choose a size based on how you like your hats to fit—snug (as shown on the last page) or slouchy (work a larger size than your head measurement).
Latest version is 1.2. Version 1 had an error in the abbreviations of C4BP and C4FP.
Yarn: Wonderland Yarns “Alice” DK weight, 70% superwash merino, 30% silk: 242 yds/4 oz skein , shown in limited edition colorway “Mont Saint-Michel”
Needles & Notions: US 5/3.75 mm 16” circular needle AND US size 7/4.5 mm 16” circular and double-pointed needles (or your preferred needle arrangement for knitting in the round) (or size required to get gauge), 4 stitch markers, cable needle, darning needle
Gauge: 20 sts & 28 rounds = 4”/10 cm stockinette stitch with larger needles
Measurements/sizing: (fitted, without negative ease) child (adult, large adult)
child/teenager: 16”/ 40.5 cm around, 7”/ 18 cm from cast-on to crown
adult: 18”/ 45.5 cm around, 8.25”/ 21 cm from cast-on to crown
large adult: 20”/ 50.5 cm around, 9.25”/ 23.5 cm from cast-on to crown
Abbreviations: C4B: move two stitches to a cable needle and hold in back, knit two sts from the left needle, knit two sts from cable needle; C4F: move two sts to a cable needle and hold in front, knit two sts from left needle, knit two sts from cable needle; C4BP: move two stitches to a cable needle and hold in back, purl two sts from the left needle, knit two sts from cable needle; C4FP: move two sts to a cable needle and hold in front, knit two sts from left needle, purl two sts from cable needle; CO: cast on; K: knit; k2tog: knit two stitches together; m: marker; pm: place marker, and on subsequent rounds, pass marker; P: purl; p2tog: purl 2 sts together; ssk: slip a st knitwise, slip a st knitwise, slide the tip of the left needle into both and knit two sts together through the back loop; ssp: slip a st purlwise, slip a st purlwise, slide the tip of the left needle into both and purl two sts together through the back loop; st/sts: stitch(es); * : work instructions in asterisks as many times as specified
