Buffalo Bean (Thermopsis rhombifolia) is a vibrant yellow flower, also known as Golden Bean, , that blooms in spring in Alberta. The name Buffalo Bean came from the First Nations Peoples; when it flowered, they knew it was time for the spring buffalo hunt. Buffalo Bean flowers were used to make dye, and were brewed as a cure for stomach ailments, and the roots were used for horse medicine. This colourful spring flower is common on the Alberta Prairies and Foothills.
