The third in the series of 12 blocks, this pattern builds on the January and February Blocks with three additional techniques: knit two together, purl two together, and yarn over.

These techniques are combined with knit and purl stitches to create four different patterns: rib, seed stitch, and two variations of lace mesh.

There is also the option to learn slipping stitches at the selvages for a smoother side edge that is easier to seam.

Notes and descriptions of new techniques included to make it easy to develop your skills!

There is some pattern terminology that may be unfamiliar to new knitters. From Row 4 of this pattern:

Row 4: S1 wyif, p1, k2, [p1, k1] 4 times, [p2tog, yo] 3 times, k1, [p1, [k1, p1] twice] twice, k1, [p2tog, yo] 3 times, k1, p2.

At the first part, you do what’s in the brackets twice, so

[p1, k1] 4 times

becomes

p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1

Similarly once we get to

[p1, [k1, p1] twice] twice

What you do is

p1, k1, p1,

At this point you come to the first “twice.” It follows the inner set of brackets, so you k1, p1, a second time. Now you have completed the inner set of brackets and you read the second “twice” which follows the outer brackets, so you go back and do the whole thing again.

What you end up doing is

p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1
