Building Blocks Blanket
Offer for 2020: 20% off any of my patterns on the 20th day of each month for 2020 with code 20FOR2020
Just released: The Building Blocks Hat in 4 sizes - the perfect sister pattern to this blanket.
The Building Blocks Blanket came about as a double bed sized blanket for my brother in law. It has since been adapted to a stroller size pattern with instructions for how to adapt the blanket into various different sizes. A schematic is included for the colour layout of a double bed sized blanket should you wish to make that size.
Blanket pictured is a 65cm (25.5”) square blanket.
Yarn:
DK weight yarn held double (2 strands together). Approx 1300m (1420 yds) total in 5 colours. Approx 225m (250yds) of 4 colours and 400m (437yds) of a fifth colour. All yarn requirements include a 10-15% buffer on top of the yardage that was actually used to create the blanket.
or
Heavy Worsted/Light Chunky yarn held single. Approx 650m (710yds) total in 5 colours. Approx 110 (120yds) of 4 colours and 200m (220yds) of a fifth colour.
Yarn used: Deramores Studio DK in Ruby (C1), Citrine (C2), Peridot (C3), Lapis (C4), Frost (C5). 1 ball of C1-C4 and 2 balls of C5.
Techniques required:
Intarsia - please not intarsia techniques are not taught within the pattern, but there are plenty of resources available from an online search that will help you.
Gauge is listed for blocked stockinette stitch in case you want to try out yarns before purchasing the pattern. On purchase of the pattern it is suggested that you use the instructions to create one block following the pattern and use that in your calculations for creating both bobbins and size of your finished blanket.
Please note:
- I am a tight knitter and some of my testers note that they need to drop a needle size to match my gauge.
- The gauge is somewhat unimportant as long as you are happy with your finished blanket size however it may alter the required amount of yarns.

One of my testers who made a full double size blanket has made some fantastic notes on her project page here that you might want to look at if you are considering making a larger size blanket. Isn’t her finished blanket awesome?!?
