The Bulky Becky Bundle contains six traditional crochet patterns based off the original Becky Lynn Beanie and Band patterns: the Bulky Becky Beanie, the Bulky Becky Band, and the Bulky Becky Cowl, each written for both bulky (category 5) and super bulky (category 6) yarn. Two colors are used to create vertical, textured stripes. Given the techniques used, this project is best suited for an advanced beginner to intermediate level crocheter.

Hooks Needed

Crochet Hooks: the following sizes based on the pattern or sizes needed to meet gauge.

• Bulky Beanie & Band: 6 mm, 7mm
• Bulky Cowl: 8 mm
• Super Bulky Beanie & Band: 7 mm, 8mm
• Super Bulky Cowl: 10 mm

Sizing

The beanie and band pattern are written for the following fixed head circumferences 16 (18, 19); 21 (22, 23, 24) inches. Measure with a flexible measuring tape around the widest part of your head. The cowl pattern is written for a small (~20-21 inch) and a large (~26-27 inch) fit. There are also instructions provided for custom sizing for all patterns.

For reference, these sizes are based on Craft Yarn Council average head circumferences as follows: Baby (16”), Toddler (18”), Child (19”), Adult Female (21-23”), Adult Male (22-24”). However, head sizes may vary outside these ranges (my 11-month-old baby’s head was 19 inches, for example). To get the best fit, measure the head circumference of the person planning to wear the band or beanie and use the size that is closest to that circumference. If that circumference is not listed, size up or use custom sizing instructions to ensure a comfortable fit.

The beanie and band are designed to have approximately 0.5-1.5 inches of negative ease, to achieve a snug but comfortable fit.

Estimated Yardage

Actual yardage will vary depending on your row gauge, desired project height, and i-cord tension. These are safe estimates based on my and my testers’ actual samples, but you should be okay with at least 110 yards of each color for almost any pattern/size choice, with the bands and smaller sized beanies using considerably less. For the largest size cowl and beanies 23 inches or larger, if made to the full height and width listed in the pattern, you may wish to have more than 110 yards to be safe. However, the cowl’s width and height are easily customizable if your yardage is close.
