I have a fond memory from childhood of my Grandma telling me the story of the Bumbalie Blanket. The Bumbalie Afghan is made with soft yarn in a highly textured finish through the use of stitches and a pattern that will raise the stitches up within the finished fabric. She explained that each “bump” in the bumbalie represents a hug from the afghan’s creator to the user, each X stitch a kiss. The crochet artist, if they knew the person they were making the afghan for, thought of their fond memories of events shared, and of their hopes for that person’s happy future as they worked the blanket. If they were making the afghan for sale, or for a new baby, the thoughts were of good health, success in life and often the values they felt important for the child. The Bumbalie is usually made in a size for a lap afghan, throw, or baby blanket.

36” X 52” as shown in example, but it is easy to alter the size of the pattern to fit your needs. The example is made in sport and worsted weight yarn, but it works well in just one or the other too.
