Bunches-a-Scrunches
Let’s get WEIRD with our scraps, shall we, little goblins? I developed this compendium while procrastiknitting finishing a sweater. These are the perfect little palette cleanse when you’re avoiding doing something, as I am right now. Bonus: they’re a scrap buster for odd bits of yarn! This compendium features 3 scrunchie styles which can be paired with any of the ribbons or bows (or both). I’ll give you details on each of the samples in the pattern.
Play with color, texture, and size. It’s fun, I promise! Branch out; throw your favorite design elements from other patterns into the mix and see what you come up with. Scrunchies are the perfect little canvas on which to paint. They’re also an excellent way to build up practice on new techniques and can even serve as a gauge swatch for other projects. How many does a person really need? Who cares! Gift them if you get carried away! Let’s party!
Sizing: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL) for a ponytail circumference of 2” (3”, 4”, 5”, 6”, 7”)/5 (7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 18) cm.
Yarn: 50 – 150 yards/45 - 140 meters/12 - 30 grams of lace – sport weight yarn per scrunchie, depending on the design. Bows, ribbons, and larger sizes require more yardage, simple and small scrunchies will need less.
Samples shown in Malabrigo Sock colorways Water Green and Valentina and Marianated Yarns Aerie Lace colorway Naked Grape.
Needles: Size US 5/3.75 mm circular or double-point needles or size needed to get a nice fabric density with preferred cable length to work flat or in the round.
I like 30”/76 cm for this project to use the magic loop method.
Gauge: 5 – 6 stitches per inch/2.5 cm on sock weight yarn. Row gauge is not important. Heck, stitch gauge isn’t massively important either. If your gauge is tighter than mine, consider bumping up a needle and conversely, down one. This isn’t the hill you need to die on.
Notions: A length of elastic as indicated by the chart (I used 5/8” double-fold elastic), sewing thread and needle, tapestry needle, 1 large safety pin, and 4 sewing pins.
