Burghfield Beanie
Back where I come from …
The first in a collection of ‘Places that shaped me’ is the Burghfield Beanie, inspired by the village I grew up in.
We moved here when I was two years old and it’s where I learned about playing rounders, being home when the streetlights came on, got my heart broke, learned to shout loud about injustice and most importantly grabbed the lifelong love of the outdoors.
This is why the brim is the focus here as it was having that strong start in life that set me up to tackle whatever the world threw at me.
Worked in the round. For the brim you will work a 12 stitch repeat that features 2x2 cables.
Written in full with handy progress check boxes, so you can keep a visual track of where you are.
I have formatted this pattern in such a way that you should only need to print page 3 & 4 (double sided).
You will find reference charts on page 5.
Saving the planet one unprinted page at a time.
Skills used …
- Long tail cast on.
- Knit and purl stitches.
- Cable (2x2)
- Decreasing (knit/purl two together).
You will need the following …
- DK or Light Worsted yarn
- 3.5mm* (US 4) 16 inch (40 cm) circulars
- 4mm* (US 6) 16 inch (40 cm) circulars
- 3.5mm* (US 4) dpns.
- BOR marker.
- Tapestry needle (for closing the crown and sewing those dreaded ends in).
(Or size required to obtain gauge).
Gauge and Size …
4mm : 22 stitches and 28 rows (4 inch / 10 cm stocking stitch in the round).
Measurements unblocked and laid flat:
- Brim base width ~ 8 inches (20 cm)
- Body width ~ 8.5 inches (21.5)
- Height ~ 9 inches (23 cm)
Full mat blocking is not as essential for this beanie. As the beanie is a close fit design it will be sufficient to lightly dampen (spray?) and wear around the house for a few hours to shape it.
I can’t wait to see your beanie so please do be sure to start a project page or tag me on Instagram and Facebook (#BurghfieldBeanie @beanieboat).
Follow me (@beanieboat) on Instagram and Facebook for updates on future patterns, test-knits and giveaways from my little floating shop. Yes, I said floating … it’s on a narrowboat :)
If you like the look of this pattern it would be a huge help to me if you would give it a like as I have an overflowing notebook of ideas and this helps me understand what to work on next. Your support of my little dream is so appreciated. Every ‘like’ helps and it’s a known fact I do a tiny happy dance each time I get a notification. I am a terrible dancer!
