These socks were inspired by a visit to a butterfly farm on the island of Noirmoutier in Vendee, France. It is the largest butterfly glass house in France and a home to over 700 butterflies of more than 100 species. The experience is unforgettable and the beauty of butterflies is inspiring. You can see more about the L’ille aux papillons here.

The Butterfly Effect sock pattern is knitted top down with heel flap, however short row substitution for the heel will work well. It calls for basic lace techniques, such as yarnovers, increases and decreases. The stitch itself is straightforward enough, however the central cable is a little more tricky than usual.

The pattern can be knitted on double pointed needles but instructions for two at a time technique are also included.

The pattern will look best in gradient, subtly variegated, pastel, semi solid and solid yarns. Slow change self striping yarns will also work, as long as the colourway is subtle and not high contrast. The pattern will not show self striping yarns to their advantage.
