The square weighs 18 grams. One skein of Emma Soft weighs 50 grams. This means you will get 2 squares from 1 skein. With more than 1 color you will of course get more squares from 1 skein.

If you wish to use a thicker yarn you will get a bigger square.

With for example Red Heart Super Saver Solids and a 5 mm hook you will only have to add 1 or 2 rows to get a 12 inch square.

This pattern can be a bit of a challenge for the beginner, but I would say that it is a fun challenge. There are lots of pictures that shows the most tricky parts.
