THROW

Skill level = Easy

In keeping with MMMannequin’s natural wilderness theme, this lace throw or baby blanket features a unique design with charming pictorial motifs. It may be used as a comforting throw, afghan or knee rug for an adult, or as a lightweight coverlet for a baby’s cot. It is sized as a square blanket, and simple calculations are provided for adjusting the size and proportions.

Worked in an easy crochet diamond mesh with shell stitches for the motifs, the fabric has a soft drape and is breathable and comfortable. Construction begins with the central panel. Then the surrounding rows are continued around all four sides, with the option of adding extra width at left and right.

Options

Two layouts are provided for the motif charts – one for fingering weight yarn and one for DK weight yarn.

The motifs could also be used for a double knitted blanket. Just rotate them so they are composed of squares instead of diamonds.

Contents

  • Written instructions for the plain blanket without motifs (USA and UK).
  • Detailed stitching chart and schematics to show construction.
  • Detailed motif charts for both layouts.
  • Clear instructions for the pictorial lace technique.
  • Simple calculations for altering the size.

PROJECTS

SKILL LEVEL

This pattern is graded Easy. Stitching charts and written instructions show how to begin and finish the garment, and a demonstration assists with interpretation of the motif block charts that form the main part.

Notes

  • Instructions for the pictorial lace
design are charted only -- written
    translations for the motif block
charts are not provided. This suits people who enjoy working meticulously from detailed charts without needing row-by-row instructions.
  • Gauge is not critical and may be adjusted as desired.
  • Working tip -- to mark your place in a complex lace design as you are working it, use a ruler that moves up the page as you work each row. When working from a printout, this can be a physical ruler. When working from a digital screen, it can be a line that is drawn with the Comment feature in the Adobe PDF reader. The line is editable, i.e. you can first draw a very short straight line, then stretch it horizontally to cover the full width of the page, then move it upwards as your work progresses up the page.
