Not 6, not 8 but 7 points in this doily and it’s very easy to work! The original design was a “catch-all” dish for a vanity from Butterick Publishing Co.’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, pp. 90-91 from 1902. It starts as a 6” doily and a rim is made by working rounds without increasing stitches. I included both doily and dish instructions. An edging of your choice can be added to the doily.
The first 2 rows of the doily are knitted back and forth to have enough stitches to start working in the round comfortably. Any small gap left by this technique can be closed when weaving in the beginning thread end. If preferred, work in the round from the start or use any technique comfortable to you to get started. Some find a crochet “magic loop” and a few rounds of single crochet very helpful for this.

Skills needed: long-tail cast on, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog (knit 2 stitches together), SKP (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over knit stitch) and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

140 to 160 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make a 6” diameter doily without the rim.
