This pattern in 1902 Butterick’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, p.147 was meant for an 8-year-old boy’s mittens. The original pattern had 7 pattern rounds. That translated to 14 rows in flat knitting. Mitten Puff is very easy: it’s just rows of stockinette and rib stitch. It’s also a multiple of 3 stitches.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Almost any yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

58 yards of Mary Maxim’s Natural Alpaca yarn will make 10 inches of a 30-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
