Buttoned cuff mitts
Looking for something fun and a bit different? These mitts are easy but also have an interesting construction. First, the cuff is knit flat and the button flap is created with short rows. Stitches are then picked up for the hand which is worked in the round. The pattern is suitable for magic loop or DPNs and suits a confident beginner or a more experienced knitter looking for a quick, fun project.
Pattern includes sizing to suit: teen/adult small (16.5-17.5 cm or 6.5 to 7 inches), adult medium (approx. 18-19 cm or 7-7.5 inches) and adult large (approx. 20-21 cm or 8-8.5 inches). The instructions for size S are given first, with the instructions for size M and L in brackets.
Links to video tutorials for short rows and magic loop are provided.
Gauge:
12 st and 16 rows to 5 cm (2 inches) in the round, in stocking stitch, unblocked.
12 st and 24 rows (12 ridges) to 5 cm (2 inches) in garter stitch, unblocked.
Differences in gauge will affect both the size of mitts and your yarn usage.
Supplies:
• Approx 130 – 180 m (approx. 140 - 200 yards) dk weight yarn that knits to gauge. The sample was knit in size M using Heirloom 8 ply yarn which has 96m per 50g.
• 3.75mm (US 5) or appropriate needles to get the desired gauge.
• Large sewing up needle.
• Needle and thread for sewing on buttons.
• Waste yarn.
• 2 stitch markers that are not the same as each other.
• 8 buttons, 1.2cm (0.5 inch) in diameter.
