Wasps are great for the garden, but not so great as close companions….the best way to deter them is to use a decoy wasp nest, they won’t invade another wasp territory.

This is a very basic pattern for making a decoy wasp nest, using materials that can take rain and bad weather without getting moldy or damaged.

Your nests can be as big or as small as you want them to be--although the bigger the better for wasp intimidation--and the colors can be any lighter natural/neutrals, like grey, tans, off whites etc… I don’t know how well wasps determine a nest is obviously a fake, but I’d assume that shocking pink might be a tip off.

My pattern calls for either chunky yarn and an I hook or Red Heart and a G hook. Most of a skein of anything ought to do it, as far as yardage goes, how big or small your nest is will dictate how much yarn you’ll use. This can be a great stash buster.

I stuff mine with plastic bags, but I imagine Styrofoam ‘pop corn’ would work as well, weatherly speaking.

My directions are basic, there is no gauge to worry about as there are no absolute widths or heights to these. Stitches can be varied, or mixed and matched. It’s a decoy wasp nest, all it has to do is scare off wasps and not look weird hanging outside your place.
