By the Fire Socks
Every child’s favourite decoration,
hung with joyous anticipation.
Rushing downstairs before sun rise,
the promise of presents and sweet surprise, guessing the gift by the shape and size -
of the bulges and bumps in your festive sack, loved ones watch on, and it takes them back -
to when they were gripped by the feverish glee, and they feel it a little - through the joy that they see.
Much more than a stocking then, or decoration - when filled with the promise of a child’s elation.
The By the Fire Socks feature a pretty folded cuff circled by sweet little trees with bobbles on top. The folded cuff hides a practical rib for a comfy fit, and flows into a simple plain sock. All of the detail is in the elegant cuff. They are knitted cuff down and finished with a slip stitch heel flap and a rounded wedge toe.
Sizes
S (M, L) the sizes are measured on leg and foot circumference, as the length of the foot is adjustable
Finished Measurements
Leg length 7cm / 3” from the cuff to the start of the heel
Leg and foot circumference 15cm / 6” (18cm / 7”, 20cm / 8”)
Gauge
36 sts and 48 rows per 4 inches/10 centimetres in stocking stitch using 2.25mm needle.
Yarn
You will need approximately 50g (60g,70g) of fingering weight yarn in your main colour - I used The Wool Barn Cashmere Sock in Mist (green)
20g of fingering weight yarn for CC1 - I used The Wool Barn Cashmere Sock in Natural (white)
5g of fingering weight yarn for CC2 - I used The Wool Barn Twist Sock in Smitten (pink)
Needles
A set of 2.25mm needles for knitting a small circumference in the round or size needed to obtain gauge and a set of 2.5mm needles for knitting a small circumference in the round or one size larger than your gauge needle.
For a comfy sock the cuff needs to be worked at a slightly larger gauge so I would recommend using a needle one size larger for that section. I would also advise working your cast on as loosely as you can while keeping the stitches neat.
Notions
Stitch markers - different coloured ones may help Darning needle to sew in your ends
