I often design baby/toddler/children knitting patterns, but somehow I most often end up designing girlish garments. This time I wanted to break the trend; and here’s a boys (or girls:) cardigan without lace or frills….
Byrons cardigan is a classic design; the beautiful double-moss stitch-pattern creates a lovely background for the front and center back cables. The hem, cuffs, button and neck-band are all worked in rib-pattern, as well as the sleeves. The neckline is a classic V - so nice for wearing on top of tees and shirts.
Construction
The cardigan is completely seamless.
The lower body is worked bottom-up and flat to underarms.
Work is divided for fronts and back to be continued in separate pieces.
Shoulders are bound off using the three-needle bind-off method.
Sleeves are worked top-down from picked-up sts. The sleeve-cap is created using simple shortrows back-and-forth. When all sts are integrated work is continued in-the-round and top-down to bind-off.
The neck-edge and button-bands are worked in one piece from picked-up sts.
Sizes
Sizes: 3months/ 6- 9months / 12- 18months / 2years / 2 – 3years / 4 – 5 years / 5 – 6 years / 7 - 8 years / 9 - 10 years Finished chest measurement (when buttoned): 45/50/54/57/61/65/68/72/76 cm = 18/20/21.25/22.5/24/25.5/27/28.5/30”.
Materials
Yarn: I used Baby Cashmere Merino Silk DK from Sublimes to work the cardigan. This yarn of DK weight comes in balls of 50gr/1.76oz and 116m/127yards. You will need 2/3/4/4/5/6/7/8 balls of this specific yarn to work the cardigan. You might substitute for any DK weight yarn that knits up to gauge. Needles: You will need a circular needle 3.5mm/US4 to work the hem of the lower body and the button-band. You will need a circular needle 4mm/US6 to work the lower body. You can use the same needle for working the upper body (or using straight needles, if preferred). For the sleeves you need a set of dpns 4mm/US6, for the cuffs you need a set of dpns 3.5mm/US4. Circular needles might be used, if working the magic loop. Notions: a cable needle, 6 removable stitch-markers, separate holders, buttons 1.2cm/0.5” across.
Gauge
22 sts in double moss-st pattern, when washed and blocked = 10cm/4”.
