Cable and Fern Cowl
The cowl has a lacy picot edge, and comprises two different stitch patterns: Cable and a Fern Lace in a repeat of six. It is knit in the round, but you can knit it flat and join up the seams, or add a vertical button border (see adaptation notes at the end of the pattern). I have used 4ply/fingering on 4mm needles to keep it dainty and add more looseness. It can be made in DK/8ply, but will, obviously, be slightly larger in size and thicker.
The alternating columns of cable and fern lace were the inspiration, which, I think, creates a light and lacy feel, and is reminiscent of natural forms, alongside cables and ropes!
YARN
4ply or Fingering – 1 x 50g ball, minimum (better with 2 x 50g).
Suggested yarns: Rowan Panama, or cotton/viscose blends, cottons; 4ply/Sock/Fingering wools and wool blends.
Can be worked in DK (8ply)
For Bulky/Chunky, omit one pattern repeat to obtain size.
NEEDLES
4mm (US 6) 60cm or 40cm length circular needles or DPNs
(or magic loop)
4mm cable needle
(optional) 2 x 4mm DPNs for I-cord lacing, or a 4mm crochet hook, for crochet lacing.
NOTIONS (optional)
Row marker, Beads, trinkets, applique, buttons, etc.
NOTE This is still a draft pattern, so if you have any comments for corrections or improvements, please let me know.
Also, I would love to see any pics of finished work!
