The cables in this pattern make these fingerless mittens fit the contours of the back of the hand and add a special visual element.

If you haven’t knitted cables before, don’t be concerned—they look more challenging to knit than they actually are. There is a complete how to with accompanying photos in the pattern.

The instructions, first written in 2012, are for working flat or in the round using dpns. However, since writing this pattern I have turned to knitting several more pairs using circular needles, which has become my preferred method. While the pattern instructions do not specifically mention circular needles, it is easy to just divide the total number of stitches in half and work in the round.

The pattern has more pages than you will need so be sure to print out just the pages you will need to follow as there is upfront information on what you will need to get started and specifically on knitting cables which will not be necessary for you if you want to save paper and ink.

I have now made about 40 or more pairs of fingerless mittens using this pattern working in the round (plus a few flat ones, too). I have tried many kinds of medium weight yarn and have been successful with all types. It’s up to you what kind of yarn whether acrylic, blends or wool to knit your mittens.

As far as finished size, this pattern is intended to fit most women. However, sometimes the yarn, though the supposedly the same weight will make the finished size vary. To make a pair of mittens fit a petite woman, just come down needle size by one—no need to adjust the pattern.
