I’ve named this pattern the Cadfael (pronounced CAD-vile – it’s Welsh) because my husband Charles was reading to me from that series of mystery novels (by Ellis Peters) while I worked on it. The shawl is roughly semi-circular, but with a bit of a curve across the top that can be used as a self-collar.

Because of the shape of this shawl, the pattern is a bit, well, dense: the increases are worked over five rows, but because of offset and a straight row between increases, the overall pattern only repeats after twelve rows. I would therefore recommend this shawl for intermediate crocheters and above. Please note also that you’ll need to block pretty strenuously to really bring out the beauty of the stitch pattern.

MATERIALS
Yarn: Fingering (#1), 500-520 yds. Shown in Teresa Ruch 100% Tencel, 520 yds.
Hook: 4.50 mm (size 7)
Gauge: Gauge isn’t important for fit, but see note below if you want this to be a one-skein project.
Notions: Three stitch markers, blocking pins, tapestry needle, scissors.
Level: Intermediate. This pattern assumes you know basic stitches – such as single crochet, double crochet, fans – as well as more advanced techniques such as clusters.

Size: 47 inches across the wingspan by 19 inches from top to tip
