Caeau Gwyrdd
This pattern is loosely based on the Fields of Green pattern by Julie Reeser. The pattern is no longer available from any source (even the designer). I wrote to her about obtaining a copy and she replied: ‘I became too ill to do the critical thinking for knitting, and pulled all my designs in case someone needed support I couldn’t give. I went to my store to see if I could print the .pdf from there, but it doesn’t look like I can. I tried a few different options, and none of them worked. You are more than welcome to try and come up with what I did… I’m kind of mad at myself, because somehow I never thought to print myself a copy of all my work before deactivating them. It’s a shame.’
The pattern is not an exact stitch-for-stitch copy of Julie’s; however I extend my thanks to her for allowing me to apply my own creativity to her out-of-print pattern.
This sock pattern is suitable for toe-up or top-down construction. I have included instructions for an “Elegant Toe,” but the knitter is welcome to use whatever toe or heel they feel comfortable with. There is also a choice of 2 different cables to work on the back of the sock.
Pattern will look good in solid, tonal, gradient, self-striping, and subtly patterned yarns.
If using Sport weight, approximately 240-250 yards will be needed. Fingering weight will require 380-450 yards. The pattern is written for:
- Teen (56 stitch) in fingering weight or Adult (56 stitch) in Sport weight
- Adult M (64 stitch)
- Adult L (72 stitch)
Needles required are size US 1-2 (2.25-2.75mm) for fingering, or US3-4 (3.25-3.5mm) for sport weight, or size needed to achieve gauge. Pattern can be knitted on DPNs, circular needles, or 2aaT, as the knitter prefers.
I suggest 2 stitch markers (4 if working 2AAT)
