Caernarfon Cushion
Designed for Wonderwool 2022, inspiration for this cushion came from woven Welsh blankets. There are a range of traditional designs and we liked the Caernarfon as it translates so well to knitting.
The four-colour cushion (yellow) is worked using both intarsia and stranded colourwork techniques to avoid carrying more than two colours across the back on any row.
The two-colour (red) version is done entirely in stranded colourwork.
The back of the cushion is striped with a buttoned envelope closure.
Suitable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable with a provisional cast on and following a charted colourwork pattern.
Adventurous knitters might choose to add an i-cord edge to edge the cushion, but we liked ours just as they are!
Materials:
3.5mm needles (or size to achieve tension)
Bodkin for sewing up
Three buttons
Cushion pad 45cm square
Yarn for four-colour version:
West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK 225m/100g 100% wool
MC: 229 Citrus Yellow x 1
CC1: 373 Stormy Grey x 1
CC2: 099 Phantom Black x 1
CC3: 011 Arctic White x 1
The front of the cushion took approximately 75g of the MC, 15g each of CC2 and CC3 and 10g of CC1. The back of the cushion then used most of rest of the MC and approximately 30g each of the other colours. If you prefer a single colour back, then you will need an additional ball of your chosen colour.
Yarn for two-colour version:
Stylecraft Naturals Bamboo Cotton DK 250m/100g 60% bamboo/40% cotton
MC: 7136 rouge x 2
CC: 7153 Pitch x 2
The cushion only just goes into the second of each ball so if the back was striped MC colour wide and CC very narrow then the cushion could be completed with two MC and one CC.
