A simple bias construction knit in garter stitch, accented by stripes, braids, and a band of stranded 2-shade, geometric color play at the border…this is what the Cajamarca Shawlette is all about. It is named after the city of Cajamarca in the Andean area of the Northern highlands of Peru where making “sling braids” to use as decorative belts, turbans, and packing gear has been passed down from ancient days. The braids that are knit on this shawlette are actually Latvian braids, but they still reminded me of these South American braids when I saw them taking shape on the shawlette. I knit this shawlette in worsted weight yarn and also DK for one of the colors, but this pattern would also work with sport weight or DK, although your measurements and yarn usage will vary from mine if you choose to change the yarn weight. 5 feet in length, and 26 inches at its deepest point, it is asymmetrical in shape. I used 400 yards in Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash in the shade of camel, and 75 yards of black in Sublime Yarn Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
