You will need 6 shades of Alice Starmore Hebridean 2 ply (or other yarn that knits to gauge) and a small amount of soft, finer 4ply or laceweight yarn for lining.

Selkie, Pebble Beach, Solan Goose, Shearwater, Kittiwake, Summer Tide.

Inspired by the Scottish fishing industry and the colours and patterns of herring scales, the name of this design (meaning “fresh herring”) comes from a song written in the early 19th century by Carolina Oliphant to a tune by fiddler, Nathaniel Gow. Gow’s music echoes the traditional street cries of the Newhaven fishwives and the sound of Edinburgh bells, while Oliphant’s words play on the familiar notion that the true cost of fish could only be measured in the lost lives of the men who caught them.
