This is a great project for beginners! You can practice knit and purl stitch on a small pattern.

Additional materials needed are scissors and darning needle for sewing in ends.

Although the pattern calls for cotton dk weight, you can substitute cotton worsted weight - the finished item will just be a bit bigger :)
