Calvin Sock
The Second Sock Syndrome Series is designed to create pairs of fraternal rather than identical socks. When made from the same yarn, these socks will appear a pair to casual observers.
Calvin will pair most closely with Hobbes.
Skill Level:
Intermediate, but may be suitable for determined or adventurous beginners.
Finished Size:
Child’s Size SM, MD, LG, Adult size SM, MD, LG, XL, XXL (foot circumference of 4.5”, 5.5”, 6.5”, 7”, 8”, 9”, 10”, 11”). Customize length according to pattern instructions.
Tools & Materials:
Yarn – Approximately 25-150 grams of fingering-weight sock yarn (25 gr for single CH-SM sock, 150 gr for pair of A-XXL).
Needle – 32” circular needle, US 1 (2.25mm), or size needed to obtain gauge. If substituting dpns divide stitches evenly between 4 needles, treating dpns 1&2 as N1 and dpns 3&4 as N2. If using two circular needles, use one for N1 and the other for N2. For 9” circular, place additional stitch marker to mark center of round.
Notions – 3-4 stitch markers (optional but recommended), tapestry needle to weave in ends, scissors.
Gauge:
40 stitches and 48 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch. Pattern instructions include 10% negative ease in width but are exact length of foot. Take time to check gauge! If your gauge doesn’t match (too few stitches per inch), use a smaller needle or knit a smaller size. Socks knit at a looser gauge don’t hold up to wear very well – it’s worth the extra effort to get smaller stitches.
