Campervan Travels Play Mat
I wanted to create a pattern where you can add you own design element in too! This play mat pattern allows you to design your own road layout with individual charts for Straight Roads, Curved Roads, T Junctions, Roundabouts and Cross Roads! You can make the mat as long and as wide as you like by using the grids and charts contained in the pattern, each square measures approx. 23cm/9″ and the border measures around 2.5cm/1″.
Each section of road is shown as an individual chart and contains detailed instructions.
There are three ways to make up you mat:
1 – you can knit individual squares and then sew them together afterwards
2 – you can knit long strips of squares which then get stitched together
3 – you can be really brave and work everything in one go – no sewing required!
The pattern also contains instructions to make a Campervan, a Cottage and three types of tree.
I made my original in Wendy Serenity Super Chunky yarn which comes in 100g balls, 80 metres of yarn per ball. To make the mat shown, which is 3 squares wide and 4 squares long, it took 400g Green and 200g Grey. I just used oddments of various other colours for the trees, cottage and campervan.
You’ll also need a pair of 6mm knitting needles, toy filling, cardboard (cottage and tree bases), paper (tree trunks), felt (tree bases/campervan lights) and beads/buttons (if you’d rather use those for campervan lights!).
The tension using super chunky yarn is 12 stitches x 16 rows to 10cm/4″. You can use a different weight of yarn as long as you adjust the needle size and make sure that you end up with a square (the ratio should be 3 stitches to 4 rows).
