Canadian Wool Mittens
I was thrilled to find some authentic Lopi yarn at a farmers market last summer (greencroftgardens.com). It brought me back about 40 years when Cowichan/Salish inspired knitting was the popular thing to do. My mom would use super long heavy needles and turn out sweaters to die for today. I wanted to make some mittens in the same style but had a hard time finding just the right pattern so I decided to write my own.
Using smaller needs these mittens are thick, dense and warm! With the benefits of lopi wool, they are my go to on cold canadian days (and nights).
Lopi (Icelandic) is knitting wool made from the fleece of Icelandic sheep. The fleece is made up of two layers, each with a different kind of wool. The wet-resistant outer coat contains long, coarse fibres, while the insulating layer beneath consists of soft, short fibres.
