Canberra Socks
An easy and fun DK weight sock pattern with all the options you’ll ever need!
This is my go-to thick and squishy sock recipe that I use when knitting up a variety of DK weight (8ply) cuff down socks, and it is perfect for knitting socks to keep you warm and toasty in the cold winter months. I’ve lived in or visited every capital city in Australia, and the coldest in my experience is Canberra, so these socks are named in honour of my visits to our nation’s capital.
You can knit these socks up in your choice of either DK weight (8ply) sock yarn, fingering weight (4ply) sock yarn held double, or my favourite - fingering weight (4ply) sock yarn held together with a strand of silk mohair.
This pattern also contains a wide variety of different instructions for your choice of cuffs, heels and stitch patterns and includes directions for:
- 1x1, or 2x2 plain or twisted rib cuffs
- slipped stitch, garter stitch and eye of partridge heels
- French and Dutch heel turns
- afterthought heels, and
- ribbing and slipped stitch patterning.
This pattern is a great pattern for both beginner and experienced sock knitters, with a host of tips, tricks and resources.
You will need around 100g of yarn, depending on the size of your foot and your preferred leg length. So pick out some amazing yarn, grab your preferred sock needles, and cast on with wild abandon! You’ll definitely want to make more than one pair!
These socks are so quick to knit and are so much fun to mix and match the different elements and try lots of new techniques!
I hope this pattern helps you with your sock knitting and inspires you to make squishy and luxurious socks.
This pattern has been tech edited and fully tested. I warmly welcome and feedback or questions about the pattern.
Happy making!
