The Cancer Ribbon Pocket Shawl is another comfort wrap in my Meaningful Makes Series. The idea behind a meaningful make is one that uses your hook to express support and love for yourself or others. Sometimes, words just can’t be found, and like me, you can rely on your hook to speak for you.

The version shown here is in pink, in acknowledgement of breast cancer awareness as it is being gifted to my friend who is about to embark upon her chemo treatments, however there are so many other colours that it can be made in that represent awareness for other types of cancer that it will be just as beautiful. Included in the pattern is a chart of ribbon colours to help you select.

Size:
Without fringe: 22” x 73” * 55.8 cm x 185.4 cm
With fringe: 22” x 80” * 55.8 cm x 203.2 cm

Level:
Intermediate 3

Special Stitches:
I have created two new stitches, the ribbon stitch and the twisted ribbon fringe as the standout design on this shawl. These stitches acknowledge the struggle cancer brings and express the hope, care and support imbued in each stitch by the maker as they crochet along thinking of the recipient. Pattern includes pictures and written instructions for special stitches

Other Stitches -
FSC, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr, fpdc, bpdc, fptr, bptr, bobble, crab.

Techniques:

  • Uneven moss join
  • Twisted fringe.
  • Twisted ribbon fringe.

Here’s what some testers have to say about this pattern…

  • I found the pattern very easy to follow.
  • Good amount of photos to go along with written instructions.
  • I loved the variety of stitches chosen, they really complimented each other and created a lovely texture and beautiful design.
  • I really loved the combination of stitches.
  • I love the ribbon stitch!!!
  • The twisted ribbon fringe is well worth the time and effort.
  • Lots of texture, but offset by simple rows, give the finished product a beautiful, heirloom look.
  • You can get lost in thoughts of your own personal journey, or of the person you are making it for, and, in turn, add lots of love to the finished product.
