Candlemaker's Coat
Introducing The Candlemaker’s Coat! This 1940s style coat is inspired by the vastly popular “jiffy knit” coat and jacket trend that swept through the pattern books in the late 1930s and early 1940s. It is knit using an aran weight yarn, meaning that this project goes fast!
Many of the 1940s coat patterns I came across incorporated some sort of textured stitch, so I invented a nifty 7-stitch repeat that is worked throughout the coat.
This is an ever-so customizable pattern. This could easily become your favorite around-the-house coat. It is so cozy and comfy, and it has pockets for snacks! But with the side seams, tailored neckline, and the option to add shoulder pads, this could also become your favorite outerwear for autumn. The lack of side shaping makes it ridiculously easy to adjust the length (go cropped! go extra long!) and judging from the original 1940s patterns, these aran weight coats are super cute with short sleeves too.
Like always, my garment patterns use a body measurement x gauge system of pattern writing, making them fully size inclusive and tailored to your personal measurements. There are plenty of resources at Squid School to get you started on this method of pattern instruction!
