Knit up in the softest cashmere with bobbles in a joyful color, this cowl has four options: Journal, or not, using two colors, or not. The brightly colored bobbles reminded me of candy buttons, but one color throughout makes a beautiful monochromatic piece. Knit in the round, this cowl fits very snug against the neck to easily tuck beneath a coat.

If you’re new to journal knitting, it’s a way to have a record of your life in a knitting project. For this cowl, one repeat (two rounds) per day is knit after answering a this-or-that question. The answer indicates whether a round will have a bobble or not.

Please note: This cowl is intended to fit very close to the neck. (Think turtleneck.)

This cowl requires approximately 115 yards of DK for the main color and .5 yard for the bobbles. It’s a flexible pattern; I have also knit one holding two strands of fingering together. If you meet gauge and are happy with the fabric, go for it! Note that holding fingering double will double the yardage requirement, and non-stretchy or very drapy fiber (silk, linen) may likely result in a cowl too tight to fit over a head. Contrast bobbles are a great place to use scraps and get creative with color choice.
