Candy Cane Stocking
This is pattern #7 in the Socks for All Seasons 2022 Club
I love to have handmade items around when decorating for the holidays, and even more so when they’re useful! One of my favorite items is a needlepoint stocking that my grandmother made me when I was a baby. It’s been 25 years since she’s been gone, but that stocking is a constant reminder of her presence.
When I’m back home in California for Christmas, my mom and I inevitably do some last-minute gift or decoration knitting. My goal with this pattern, was for it to be a quick knit just for this purpose and to use leftovers that you have on hand.
It’s perfect for using up your worsted-weight scraps and incredibly versatile. You could do different color stripes, and different color sections, the options are endless. (I’ve drawn a couple of ideas below). Team colors? School colors? Totally doable and would make a great gift!
The i-cord hanger built into the cuff makes it strong and gives it needed stability and a clean edge.
Gauge: 4 stitches/inch using US 8 (5 mm circular needles).
Yarn: The intention with this pattern is to make use of your leftovers, it’s perfect for your scrap yarn and allows you be creative with color (examples above of color ideas).
The sample was made with left over Rowan Pure Wool Aran (a little less than 1 ball) and a mini skein of Brava Worsted which is 25g in the Wine colorway.
You’ll need 100 grams of aran weight, and about 10 grams of a contrasting color yarn.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you’re using a red yarn and it’s not acrylic, test to make sure that it won’t bleed in water before you start. Red yarn bleeding onto white yarn is heartbreaking.
Materials:
-US 8 (5mm) circular knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge), I recommend at least 32 inches (my preferred length).
-100 grams of aran weight yarn for MC.
-10-15 grams of aran weight for CC.
-Stitch marker or locking stitch marker (optional).
-Darning needle.
Notes:
This pattern is written for magic loop, but can easily be changed to DPNs. Use 2 needles for N1, and another 2 for N2.
