These legwarmers from my book were inspired by a pair of fisherman socks from the collection of Sebastião Pessanha (b. 1892), a Portuguese ethnographer who (unlike many others) paid attention to knitted artifacts and tools throughout his life. Coarse touristic versions of this type of socks are still handmade and sold today, some of them bearing interesting stranded patterns.
