The Cannon Beach Cowl is knit in the round from the top down. It features two slip stitch patterns that evoke seagulls and waves. Only one color is worked per round.

This cowl was inspired by the loveliness of Woolfolk FÅR, which has an interesting texture due to the chainette construction of the yarn. Slip stitch patterns show off strands of yarn; the texture would otherwise be hidden in the stitches.

The fluffy thick/thin of single ply Malabrigo Merino Worsted is also a good choice for this project (purple detail photo). A plyed yarn gives quite a different look (apple green/purple detail photo). Knitter’s choice!

The circumference of the cowl is easily adjusted by adding increments of 10 stitches, and the height can be adjusted by increasing the number of waves.

You’ll use two colors: 90/120/135 yards MC, and 55/60/65 yards CC.

An eagle-eyed knitter caught an error in the written intstructions for the Left Wave Pattern. Round 5 should read: Rnd 5: K4, Sl 5 wyif, K5, Sl 5 wyif; rep from to last to last 1 st, k1.

The chart is correct.

I’ve updated the pattern with the proper Rnd 5 instructions.
