Canova Beach, one of my local beaches, is like most others. It constantly renews itself, as the waves bring the sand in and take it out again. The wind sculpts the dunes, while the sea oats and other vegetation keep it all from eroding away. This circle is infinite and always.

Translated into knitting, Canova Beach is a long capelet, knitted in the round with lace, cables and texture stitches calling to mind waves, drifting sand dunes and the sea oats that hold them fast, despite the action of wind and water. The stitch patterns are straight forward and easy to remember, which makes it a pleasing knit for adventurous beginners, but enough of a challenge to keep more experienced knitters engaged.

Living near the beach most of my life, I am currently living close enough so I can visit often. I love to hear the wind singing as it blows through the sea oats. As the wind sweeps across the water and up the dunes, you pull your capelet a bit closer around you, knowing that you created this warmth and physical embrace you have cascading over your shoulders and down your body.

Yarn Used:
Arrowhead Fibers Basic Sock Yarn (75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon, 463 yds / 423m, 3.5 oz / 100g skein); 3 skeins.
The sample used colors Lagoon, Stormy Seas and Silver Fox.

Yardage:
CC1 Lagoon; 175 – 235 yds / 160 – 215m*
CC2 Stormy Seas; 175 – 235 yds / 160 – 215m*
CC3 Silver Fox; 300 – 410 yds / 275 – 375m*

Yardage estimates include 15% +/- those used in sample.

Needles:
US 4 (3.5mm) circular, 32” (80cm) or longer. A long circular needle is recommended in order to accommodate the large number of stitches.
US 2 (2.75mm) circular, 24” (60cm) or shorter. A shorter circular needle is recommended when stitch count is 180 or less.

Gauge:

22 sts and 38 rnds = 4” / 10cm for Old Shale (swatch in the round on US 4 needles).

24 sts and 30 rnds = 4” / 10cm for Shifting Sands Cables (swatch in the round on US 4 needles).

28 sts and 44 rnds = 4” / 10cm for Sea Oats Cables/Texture (swatch in the round on US 2 needles).

Size:
One size, but pattern notes have suggestions for customizing your capelet to suit your personal preferences or sizing needs.

Circumference at neck: 24”/ 61cm after blocking
Circumference at hem: 48”/ 122cm after blocking
