Canyonlands - National Park Blanket Square
Pattern Inspiration:
This year, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. The blanket is made up of 60 blanket squares - one to celebrate each of the 59 National Parks and one square to celebrate the National Park Service itself.
Canyonlands National Park is located in southeastern Utah and was established in 1964. It includes four districts each with their own adventures: the Maze, the Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Green and Colorado Rivers. Erosion by the Green and Colorado rivers have exposed countless canyons and formations throughout the park. One of the most notable are the Needles. Composed of Cedar Mesa Sandstone, which is known for its visually striking layers of reds, pinks, and creamy white rock, you can hike right past the formation to bask in its warm glory. You can also drive or bike along remnant marine and coastal sand dunes, known as the White Rim while visiting Island in the Sky. The designer spent three summers hiking this rugged terrain in search of Mexican Spotted Owls during the quiet, still, starlit nights. This square is a night scene of a popular formation in the Needles District known as Druid Arch.
