Canyons at Sunset is a rustic crescent shawl that will bring warmth to those cold winter months. The inspiration came from the color of the Malabrigo Twist, which after much musing, I decided reminded me of pictures that I have seen of sunsets in desert canyons out west. I have always been in awe of the beautiful colors that occur right at sunset in the canyons, onward to dusk, where purple, pink, terracotta, blue and green all blend in a perfect balance to create one stunning moment.
Difficulty of Pattern: 2/3 out of 5 for an advanced knitter and 3/4 out of 5 for a newbie knitter for difficulty due to the fact that there is an intermediate stitch pattern and lace. The higher difficulty rating is mainly from the perspective of a newer knitter, without much experience. It really depends on how much knitting experience you have, if you are an experienced knitter it won’t be difficult but a newish knitter might have some trouble with the intermediate stitch pattern and lace. Instructions are given for the different techniques, a video is provided for reference for the intermediate stitch pattern and lace is written and charted out. Adventurous beginner to Advanced Knitter!:)
Materials
Yarn Used: Malabrigo Twist-1 skein=150 yards/100 gms(for reference) Sample knit in Liquid Ambar as main color and Applewood as contrast color.
Yarn Amounts Required for Shawl:
Main Color-5 skeins of Malabrigo Twist or approximately 735 yards of an Aran weight yarn
Contrasting Color-3 skeins of Malabrigo Twist or approximately 405 yards of an Aran weight yarn
If you are knitting the entire shawl in one color then you will need approximately 8 skeins of Malabrigo Twist or 1140 yards of an Aran weight yarn
Needles: US 10/6.0 mm 36 inch circular needle
Gauge: 16 sts x 22 rows=4 inches in twisted stockinette stitch
Shawl Measurements after Blocking:
66 inches from wingtips to bottom center
61 inches wide at the widest points
31 inches from center CO edge to bottom edge
The Malabrigo Twist relaxes significantly after blocking so don’t be afraid to block your shawl aggressively to get a good drape.(There are pictures of the shawl blocking on my project page if you need a little help.)
Notions: 2 removable stitch markers, darning needle for weaving in ends, tools for blocking your finished shawl

k1tbl-knit 1 st through the back loop
kyok-knit, yo, knit into the same stitch st/s-stitch/stitches
CO-cast on BO-bind off RS-right side of work WS-wrong side of work RH-right hand LH-left hand MC-main color CC-contrast color PM-place marker
sm/SM-slip marker RM-remove marker
yo-yarn over-bring the needle from back to front and up over the RH needle and work the next st as written in the pattern
AYO/ayo-afterthought yarn over-Lift the bar running between the sts with your LH needle from front to back and knit it. This creates a smaller hole than a regular yarn over. It is similar to knitting a M1L increase only you do not twist the stitch to close it. I prefer this type of yarn over for the border sts because it is worked the same no matter what type of stitch comes before or after.
sl2-k1-psso-slip 2 sts, knit 1, pass slipped sts over-slip 2 sts together knitwise, knit 1 st, pass the 2 slipped sts over the knit st.
Ssk-slip, slip, knit-slip 1 st knitwise, slip the next st purlwise, knit both sts together through the back loop.
This pattern so far has only been knit by me, so if you find any errors or have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to let me know! Thanks and Happy Knitting!
