This is the fifth pattern in the Traveling Stitches Sock Club

I got low-key obsessed with the idea of car camping in the past couple of years. The idea of just throwing an air mattress, a knitting project, a camping stove, and a quilt in the back of my car and disappearing for a weekend sounds so inviting. This cozy cabled sock pattern is inspired by the idea of enjoying a slow morning cozied under the quilt with a cup of coffee and a pair of cabled socks with the back of the car open, just mindfully enjoying nature.

Gauge:

8 stitches/inch on 2.25 mm (US 1) circular needles.

Sizing:

1 (2,3) - which fits a foot circumference of (unstretched) 7.5 inches (8 inches, 8.5 inches) around.

When choosing a size, focus on your foot circumference rather than the length of your foot.

Yarn:

The sample shown is made with Knit Picks Stroll Tweed in Barn Door Heather. This is a 4-ply yarn made from superwash wool with nylon and Donegal tweed. 65% Superwash Wool 25% Nylon, and 10% Donegal tweed 50g/skein which is 231 yards. For all three sizes, you’ll need two balls.

Sample: 1 Ball Knit Picks Stroll Tweed 75% Wool, 25% Nylon 437 yards/100g.

Regia Tweed 4ply is a good substitution and similar cost-wise, as is Trekking Tweed.

Materials:

  • US 1 (2.25) circular knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge), I recommend at least 32 inches (my preferred length). You can substitute DPNs and 9-inch circulars for circulars as well and I’ll show you how.
  • 100 grams of fingering-weight sock yarn.
  • Stitch marker or locking stitch marker (optional).
  • Cable needle (optional).
  • Ruler or measuring tape.
  • Darning needle.
  • Sock blockers to photograph your socks once you’re done! (optional).
