Camel hair is one of the most recognizable fibers in the world, if undyed, due to its distinctive light brown, honey-tinged color. The camel yarn I used for this vest shows this color at best, but it is also incredibly nice to knit: dense and almost silky.

The vest has a deep V neck and deep armholes that show off the unusual wide borders that steer off the most traditional border stitches like ribs or garter.
An offset zig-zag motif is knitted in the border and help it lay flat alternating knits and purls while creating a unique motif. A wider band of the same motif edges the bottom part of the vest.

The vest is knitted from the top down. Front shoulders are cast on and worked down to the point when you join them on a single piece. Then the back is picked up from the shoulders and knitted downwards, shaping the shoulders and the armholes. When both front and back are at armhole level, all of the vest is transferred to a long circular needle and knitted seamlessly downwards. The vest is worn with minimal positive ease. As it has very wide armholes, I didn’t add any breast shaping. It fits best women with smaller breasts.

Caravan Petrol is a satirical song by Italian singer and songwriter Renato Carosone, who in the 1950’s revolutionized the Italian (and Neapolitan) scene. The song refers in a rather funny way to the discovery of relevant amounts of oil in the Arab peninsula creating a character who walks through Naples dressed as a makeshift Arab looking for oil.

Il pelo di cammello è una delle fibre più riconoscibili, se non tinta, grazie alla sua tonalità mielata naturale. Il filato usato per questo gilet è un puro cammello che mostra al meglio le caratteristiche di colore, ma che è anche incredibilmente piacevole da lavorare, denso e setoso.
Il gilet ha una profonda scollatura a V; gli scalfi accentuati mettono in evidenza l’insolito bordo diverso dai punti classici (coste, legaccio, grana di riso). Un motivo a zig-zag sfalsato costituisce un bordo che mantiene il lavoro piatto grazie all’alternanza di dritti e rovesci che creano questo insolito decoro. Il bordo inferiore del gilet è costituito da un’ampia dello stesso motivo.
Eseguito top down, il gilet viene avviato dalle spalle. Il davanti si lavora fino all’altezza dello scalfo, quindi si riprendono le maglie per eseguire il dietro fino alla stessa altezza. Quando il davanti e il dietro sono entrambi giunti alla base dello scalfo, le maglie sono riprese e il lavoro prosegue in tondo senza alcuna cucitura.
Il gilet si indossa con un agio modesto. Dato che lo scalfo è particolarmente profondo, non ho eseguito alcuna sagomatura per il seno. Ciò significa che veste meglio le donne con poco seno.
Caravan Petrol è una canzone satirica scritta da Renato Carosone. Fa riferimento alla scoperta del petrolio nella penisola arabica inventando un arabo di casa nostra, con il turbante comprato alla Rinascente, che scava speranzoso buchi a Napoli.
