Carolina is a crescent-shaped shawl that begins with a provisional cast-on (or a traditional one that you’ll pick up later) and an easy slip-stitch herringbone pattern. The body of the shawl is then filled in with short rows and bound off at the top edge. Then the cast-on is picked up to work the lace border, which is knitted-on sideways. It’s classy and elegant in a rich maroon, or airy and fresh in a lighter shade.

The pattern assumes familiarity with short rows (no wraps), the Backwards Loop cast-on, and the Provisional cast-on (optional).

Manos del Uruguay Fino has a beautiful sheen and rich coloration that’s perfect for this shawl - and you only need one skein! I had 25 yards of my skein remaining after binding off. If you’re worried about yardage, it’s easy to adjust the pattern to conserve a little more yarn.

Gauge measurement is taken after blocking. Your working gauge can vary by quite a bit and still block out.

A 32” or longer circular needle is recommended to accommodate the large number of stitches. If you use the Provisional cast-on you’ll also need a crochet hook and a good length of smooth, strong waste yarn.

A schematic is included. The Herringbone and stockinette sections are written only. The lace border is fully written and charted.
