Carol's Hat
I wrote this pattern long ago, and never actually published it. I always make this hat for friends/family that go through chemo-they wind up loving it because the brim sort of hides that little bit of forehead that your hair typically covers.
This is an intermediate pattern, is worked in the round on circular needles (you could use DPNs if you prefer)
you will need two colors if you want to make the little butterfly embellishments as well, otherwise one color will suffice for the main hat and embellishment.
Carol was my neighbor. She was diagnosed with lymphoma and fought hard. Sadly, she lost her battle, but her smiles continues on, in all the lives she touched. I will never forget the day that a tree trimming company came to chop limbs off off all the beautiful oak trees that lined our road-the graceful branches had formed a magnificent arch over the road on both sides and began to touch so when you would drive down the road you had the feeling as if you were being embraced by all of nature. I was devastated. Completely inconsolable. Carol called me, knowing how sad I was and asked me to walk down to her house. She had painted a giant happy face on one of the open faced sores left from a severed limb on the trees that had been mutilated. Over the years, the smiley face faded, the wood rotted and all that is left is an ugly black hole. But I still only see a smiley face.
