The word Carousel originated during the 12th century, in Europe, and refers to a type of jousting game played by knights on horseback. It was an amusing way for them to practice cavalry skills and involved aiming a large spear through tiny rings, that were wrapped in bright ribbons, and suspended around a training stadium.

The colorwork for Carousel is done a bit differently, combining elements from two different techniques. There are six stripes of color that maneuver through the main color of this hat, and each of those stripes have their own length of yarn. The working yarn is the main color, which will be stranded behind each of the stripes, much like Fair Isle knitting. The yarn for the stripes will be dropped after they are done being worked in their section, much like Intarsia knitting. On the next round, those strands will be picked, worked, and then dropped again, so that the only yarn carried throughout the entire hat is the main color.

The instructions have been written for 3 contrast colors to be incorporated into the stripes, each used twice, but this hat can be made with 1, 2, or 6 contrast colors, as well.
