This hat was inspired by my sister while she was working on a farm in New Mexico. She is an artist first and foremost, and loves to connect art with food and ecology. I wanted to make something for her that would celebrate art and creativity, as well as her love for homegrown food.

This simple, playful colorwork design comes in three sizes so you can share it with anyone in your life who celebrates the handmade and the homegrown.

Construction: This is a colorwork hat knit in the round bottom up. No more than two colors are held together at once.

Techniques Used:
Knitting in the round
2x2 ribbing
Increasing and decreasing
2-stranded colorwork

Gauge: 21 sts and 27 rows over 4” / 10 cm in colorwork section

Sizes: 1 (2, 3) Baby (Youth/Adult Small, Adult Large)
Circumference (unstretched): 14 (18, 22)” / 35.5 (45.75, 55.75) cm
Length (customizable): 6 (8, 10)” / 15.25 (20.5, 25.5) cm

Picking a Size: Choose a size 1-4” (2.5-10 cm) smaller than head circumference. Sample shown in size 2 on 22“ (55.75 cm) head.

Yarn:
Juniper Moon Herriot (DK Weight)
100% Baby Alpaca / 219 yards (200 meters) per 100 g skein

MC1 Pebble: 46 (79, 119) yds / 42 (72, 108) m
MC2 Travertine: 20 (36, 53) yds / 18 (32, 48) m
CC1 Buckwheat: 9 (14, 18) yds / 8 (12, 16) m
CC2 Green Heather: 7 (9, 14) yds / 6 (8, 12) m

You can use 4 contrasting colors of any DK weight yarn. Feel free to mix and match your colors, or use just two or three colors! For example, if you want to use two colors, MC1 and CC2 can be the same color, and MC2 and CC1 can be the same color. Just add the yardage amounts for each together to make sure you have enough yarn.
