Carry-on; A Mandala of Hope
I wanted to make a mandala that gave a nod toward Marinke Slump (aka Wink), who lost her battle with depression in June 2015. I didn’t know her, but her story touched me, as I have also fought depression most of my life- still do! I happily used one of her patterns to send in for the #MandalasForMarinke project by Kathryn Vercillo (http://www.crochetconcupiscence.com/). Wink was known for her use of color, and in some of her mandalas, there is no fancy stitch work, just the colors. In that respect, this is my tribute. This mandala is almost all double crochet and chains (with a few sc, hdc, and htr thrown in!). No post stitches, clusters, spikes, or any other “fancy” stitches. *
This is also a thank you to Kathryn. Not just for the tribute she is organizing for Wink, and all the hard work that is going into that, but also for her constant work showing how Craft is Therapy! Crafting in one way or another has always helped me to stay sane.
I used #10 crochet thread and a 1.5mm hook, and attached the final row onto a 14” craft ring. However, I gave instructions for the final row to be with or without the ring. This can definitely be made in regular yarn as well, it will just be much bigger! Normally, I try to include pictures of each round individually. Unfortunately, I didn’t do that with this, but I did make sure to include a couple close up pics, so you can see the rows. I also didn’t measure yardage, since I did some of the work while out and about. I can only say that with thread, it didn’t take too much!
* This would seem to make it a beginners pattern. However, I do recommend that you have some experience with mandalas, since I didn’t include the pics- you have to understand where to join, and the basic structure of a mandala.
EDIT 5/23/16: I corrected some errors, and uploaded a new pdf.
